The couple was appearing at the press conference for the final round of the World Cup series America in Chicago and when fellow Australian Spithill was presented as "local hero Oracle Team USA," Ashby not he could help it.
When asked what he regarded as the toughest opposition of the New Zealand team, Ashby said: "Team GBR and AUS ... Team USA, I'm sorry you put the letters confused sometimes."
Spithill isn't the only Australian in Oracle with seven of the 14 crew hailing from across the Tasman, while two others have dual heritage, according to the team's website.
The pattern of Oracle took the jibe in good heart, although it seeks to achieve Ashby back in the water with the New Zealand team with a two-point lead at the top of the standings ahead at the end of week.
The pair know each other well have been successful part of the challenge of the America's Cup Oracle against Alinghi in 2010, with tutoring Ashby Spithill in multihull racing.
